Entry No. 4

The first meeting of Goldfinch's book club will be on Wednesday evening. We'll all decide together what we would like to read. The club will also be a safe place to vent, or just express how you're feeling.

I'm hoping to have a large group! Students and teachers are invited.

Book Recommendation: The Picture of Dorian Grey
by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Grey is the story of a young man who fears growing old more than anything else in the world. He wishes that he will stay young forever and his wish comes true, though not without its consequences.

I would recommend anything by Oscar Wilde, really.

So it seems that some people would be interested in starting a book club depending on what books are chosen. Maybe we could vote at the first meeting about what sorts of books we would like to read? I'd be happy to have the first meeting at my place. We could make it like a dinner and book club meeting all at the same time.

Book Recommendation: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
by James Joyce
A semi-autobiographical work that traces the life of Stephen Dedalus, a young boy facing the trials of life in late 19th century Ireland.

The summer has gone by so fast! Though I suppose that's probably because it's so short here. I don't really mind, though. This place is so empty without all of the students here. It will be nice to have them back.

Would anyone be interested in starting a book club? We could have one that both teachers, students, and staff could be in. It might be a nice way to meet new people.

Book Recommendation: A Separate Peace by John Knowles
This book is set during the early years of World War II and explores the relationship between two boys who attend a boarding school in New England.

I've realized that I've been working here for nearly two years and I've hardly done any socializing. I guess it just feels a little weird to socialize with my colleagues when most of them used to be my teachers. There seem to be a lot of new younger teachers, however, so I suppose I should make friends with them. Every time I try to leave the library to socialize, I get distracted by another book. There seems to always be something new. And there are always books that I've already read that I can go back to.

I'll be spending most of the summer here, with the exception of a few weeks when I'll be up at the farm with Mom and Gram and Gramps. It'll be nice to be home for a while, especially to see the new calf. I just wish I hadn't missed his birth.

Congratulations to the seniors, by the way. Good luck next year! I know you all will do wonderfully where ever you go.
